Testing Overview

The ISEE, or Independent School Entrance Exam, is a standardized test developed by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) for its member schools as part of their admission process. The exam aims to provide a standardized way to measure the skills and knowledge of school applicants. The ISEE is used by many independent schools throughout the United States and internationally to assess students’ readiness for academic coursework.

How to Register

You can register for the ISEE exam by going to the ERB website.

Testing Dates

The ISEE is a standardized test that can be taken at various private schools worldwide and at a variety of test sites, on multiple dates. However, it is important to note that a student can take the ISEE only once every six months. We suggest that students take the ISEE once or twice during the year they are applying to schools.

Timing

The ISEE is approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes.

What's Covered on Exam

Note:

The test is administered at three levels:

Lower (for students currently in grades 4 and 5)

Middle (for students currently in grades 6 and 7)

Upper (for students currently in grades 8-11)

Scoring

The ISEE test follows a scoring system that converts a student's raw score into a scaled score. Each correct answer in the test adds one point to a student's raw score, regardless of the difficulty level of the question. However, the scaled score is adjusted based on the student's grade level, meaning that only scores of students in the same grade can be compared. For instance, an 8th-grade student who gets the same raw score as an 11th-grade student will have a higher scaled score. So, if an 8th grader encounters unfamiliar content on a section, they should not worry, as the makers of the test expect most students from lower grades to miss those questions. It's essential to answer all questions, as there is no penalty for guessing.

The essay is not scored by the ISEE. Instead, it is included in the student's score report, which is sent to the schools to which the student is applying. The essay provides an opportunity for admission officers to assess the student's writing skills.

After taking the ISEE, it typically takes 7-10 business days for the scores to be reported to schools. To ensure that the scores are received in time to meet application deadlines, it is important to schedule the final ISEE accordingly.
