Testing Overview

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is an exam used by colleges to determine student eligibility for graduate programs. Unlike other standardized tests, the GRE is taken using a computer. Colleges assess a student’s GRE along with previous academic performance, GPA, and extracurricular activities when sorting through potential graduate school candidates. Performing well on the GRE can really increase your opportunities when applying to different graduate programs.

How to Register

To take the GRE you must schedule an appointment. There are three different ways to do this:

1. Register online through the ETS website.

2. Call the test center directly or the Prometric Call Center at 1-443-751-4820 or 1-800-GRE-CALL (1-800-473-2255).

3. Download and fill out a registration form and mail the fee and signed voucher request form in the envelope provided to the address printed on the voucher at least 4 weeks before your test date.

Testing Dates

You can take the GRE General Test once every 21 days, up to five times within any continuous rolling 12-months period (365 days). This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously.

Timing

The GRE is approximately 4 hours long, including breaks.

What's Covered on Exam

Note: There may be an unscored research section.

The test has a 10-minute break following the third section and 1-minute breaks between the other sections.

The Verbal Reasoning section contains Reading Comprehension, Text Completion, and Sentence Equivalence questions.

The Quantitative Reasoning section has Multiple-choice questions, Grid-in questions, and Quantitative Comparison questions, which can appear independently or as part of a Data Interpretation set.

Math questions are similar to those on the SAT and cover Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Data Analysis.

Scoring

The GRE yields separate scores in the 130-170 range (in 1-point increments) for both the verbal and quantitative tests. The analytical writing test is scored on a scale of 0 to 6 in ½-point increments. Subject Tests scores range from 200 to 990. Verbal and quantitative scores are typically more important for admission to graduate school than Subject Test scores. Doing well on the GRE is essential for most doctoral programs, while master's programs are generally less competitive.

Score reports are sent to your designated score recipients approximately 10–15 days after your test date. When choosing a test date, allow time for delivery of scores and processing by the institution.
