As a parent, you want the best for your child. You want them to succeed academically and be prepared for their future. One way to do this is by taking advantage of the Bright Futures Scholarship program in Florida.
What is the Bright Futures Scholarship, you ask?
It's a non-need based scholarship that Florida high school graduates can earn for their academic achievements and community service. And the best part? You can apply even if you're not planning to attend a Florida college.
So why should you encourage your child to apply for the Bright Futures Scholarship?
Well, we all learned during the pandemic that the future can be uncertain. By applying for this scholarship, your child can have a safety net in case their plans change. And let's be real, who wouldn't want some extra financial aid for college?
Here's how your child can apply:
Step One: Check eligibility by visiting https://www.floridastudentfinancialaidsg.org/PDF/FAS-FMS.pdf
Step Two: Create a Student Account at https://www.floridastudentfinancialaidsg.org/SAPHome/SAPHome?url=home and complete the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA).
Step Three: Make sure to send SAT or ACT scores to a Florida public university.
Step Four: Submit community service hours to your guidance counselor before graduation.
It's that simple! And the rewards are worth it. Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) can receive an award to cover up to 100% of tuition and applicable fees, as well as $300 for both fall and spring semesters for additional educational expenses. Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) can receive an award to cover up to 75% of tuition and applicable fees.
BUT DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! The deadline for high school seniors to apply is August 31 after the graduation year, also make sure to check the website listed above for any extensions. AICE and IB Diploma students can also be eligible for the Bright Futures Scholarship without having to earn a minimum score on the SAT or ACT.
