How Do You Know if Dual Enrollment is Right for Your Child?

Writer: Sapneil ParikhSapneil Parikh

Dual enrollment is a program which allows high school students to take college courses during high school. This offers a number of advantages, such as allowing them to get a head start on their education, and their career. Additionally, they are slowly introduced to the various hardships of college, instead of simply being thrust into college life once they graduate. Most importantly, you will be saving thousands of dollars in tuition and fees, because dual enrollment is completely free. We’ve made it easier than ever to find out if dual enrollment is right for your child. Just keep reading and ask yourself these 3 simple questions:

1.  Is Dual Enrollment available for my child? If your child attends a public high school here in Florida, you’re in luck. State legislature requires every school district to draft an agreement with a Florida College System institution to create a dual enrollment program. This Excel Spreadsheet lists all such agreements as of 2024 by institution and school district (I found it easiest to navigate by finding your institution of interest by in one of the left-most three columns, then scrolling right to find what school districts they support). Additionally, all private schools are eligible to join the dual enrollment program, but you must contact your school to ask for their particular policies.

2.  Does my child qualify for Dual Enrollment? Florida statutes require all dual enrollment students to maintain at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA (or 2.0 for career course), be enrolled at a secondary school or home education program in state, and demonstrate college readiness. The last step involves having your child complete an assessment approved by the State Board of Education. This includes the PERT, AccuPlacer, SAT, ACT, and CLT. Be sure to confirm with your institution of choice, because or legislature allows them to include additional criteria for enrollment and use additional methods to demonstrate college readiness.

3.  Most Importantly! Does my child have what it takes for Dual Enrollment? Not every high school student is ready for the intensity of college courses. Taking them at the same time as high school classes can become stressful and overwhelming if your child is not properly prepared. They must also score high enough on one of the tests listed above to be eligible. If your child doesn’t have experience with these fast-paced, college readiness exams, we suggest tutoring. Of course we do, we’re a tutoring company. But we are more than that. Our founder, Dr. Sapneil Parikh, has spent the last twenty years studying medicine and psychology. Using his expertise he has developed a holistic system of tutoring, backed by science. First, we offer your child free diagnostic exams, like a doctor identifying the root of an issue. Next, we look at your child as a person, not just a student, and work with you to find out their exact needs. Then, like any good doctor, we let you determine exactly what treatment is best, by choosing from our suite of tutoring programs at affordable prices. Once we know the best path forward with your child, we tutor them with surgical precision. That means one-on-one sessions, online or in-person, which use carefully selected practice tests and study materials to ensure your child is learning at their fullest potential. Finally, we report back to you after every session with detailed progress reports and the flexibility to adjust as necessary.

If you answered yes to these questions, act now to get your child dual enrolled. If you get your child the tutoring they need now, they will be ready for exams in the spring. Then, depending on the institution, you will only have a few weeks to get your applications in order by the time Fall Semester Enrollment opens (usually around April or May). Don’t let your child miss out on this opportunity to advance their educational careers!
